B ENGLISH 9
Level: 9th Grade
Students will be reading short stories, plays, poetry and nonfiction and will read for understanding, interpretation, and enjoyment. Students will write extensively about the literature and their world, using the writing process and appropriate writing conventions. Students will also read extensively from books they have selected and will make oral presentations in class.
B ENGLISH 10
Level: 10th Grade
Speech and communication skills will acquaint students with skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The students will be instructed in strategies for improving reading which make them aware of their deficiencies and ways that they can correct them. The students will use the writing process to write both personal and expository essays that will be kept in a folder. The students will be instructed in speaking techniques for small groups and public speaking. The students will be made aware of the importance of listening and given strategies to improve it.
B ENGLISH 11
Level: 11th Grade
The students will read and discuss selected American authors and view appropriate movies. Readings will include a variety of genres, short stories, novels, poetry and nonfiction. Each reading selection will involve students participating in pre-reading, during reading and after reading activities. Students will keep a writing portfolio of all the writings done for class. Students will be expected to demonstrate writing conventions. These will include organization, comprehension (depth of thought), voice and surface features (grammar). Students will also be expected to read other books, in which they will be tested or be expected to give book reports. Student’s performance will be evaluated by quizzes, writings, presentations and a researched report.
B ENGLISH 12
Level: Grade 12
Senior English is designed for those students who plan to attend a one- or two-year program beyond high school or plan to enter a technical field. The focus includes practical writing skills, reading nonfiction and fiction, and making oral presentations to the class. Students will complete a research project and present that both orally and in a paper, using and citing appropriate sources.

B ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH
Level: 12th Grade
Students will write extensively in Advanced Placement English. They must write various types of essays (error free) as well as a term paper following the new M.L.A. format. Students will read nonfiction selections and will discuss these in class. Students will also read articles on effective writing and apply these ideas to their work. Students will also study British literature and read extensively from a variety of literature and nonfiction books.
B HS ENGLISH SUPPORT RR
Level: 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grades
English Essentials is designed to help students grasp basic skills in English Language Arts. The course focuses on reading skills, grammar and mechanics, and writing techniques to help students reach grade level competency.
B PRINT MEDIA I
Level: 10TH, 11th & 12th Grades
Prerequisites: Above Average grades in previous English classes. Permission of Instructor
The course will instruct the student in preparing the yearbook and in reporting. The courses will cover production of the school newspaper and yearbook. Upon completion of this course the student will also be able to prepare the yearbook and school newspaper.
B PRINT MEDIA II
Level: 11th & 12th Grades
Prerequisites: Must have completed Print Media I
Students will continue working on the yearbook program and newspaper. Second year students will be given leadership roles and will continue developing layout and design skills along with mentoring new staff.
C U.S. HISTORY
Level: 9th Grade
To properly understand today's world and the causes of our problems, the student must have a background in American history. This course will cover the major aspects of American history from 1876 to the present. In addition, time will be spent each week on current events. The student will also be exposed to paperbacks, filmstrips, and videotapes of relevant news specials.
C GOVERNMENT/ECONOMICS--full year
Level: 10th Grade
This course will provide an in-depth look at our fundamental freedoms, political parties, federal finance, and American foreign policy. The student will also learn how our governmental and economic systems work together to the benefit of our citizens. The role of economics in our everyday life will be emphasized to the students.
C WORLD HISTORY
Level: 11th and 12th Grade
This course is to learn about the World from the beginning (Prehistoric times) to the information revolution (present day). The course activities include lecture, daily note taking, projects, research assignments, presentations, worksheets and tests.
C PSYCHOLOGY
Level: 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grade
Students will be given a basic background in the study of human behavior. Topics covered in the course will include the science and problems of behavior, learning, thinking, personality, intelligence, heredity and environment, and mental health. Class discussion pertaining to individual experiences will constitute the majority of class time. Experiments pertaining to the material covered will be conducted. At the conclusion of Psychology, the student will have a better understanding of human behavior, which will benefit him in understanding himself and others.
C CURRENT EVENTS
Level: 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grade
This is a course designed to give students an opportunity to analyze current events in politics, business, and culture in the context of history. Students will use several sources (internet, newspapers, magazines, and TV) to gain knowledge about issues that affect our lives.
D BIOLOGY I
Level: 9th-12th Grade
Biology I is a course designed to give the student a fundamental background in Biology & ecology. The topics covered are: basic biological principles, cells, genetics, and microorganisms. This class puts emphasis on the processes of science as well as mastering important facts of biology. Objectives will be clearly stated for each chapter. All students that are going on to further education after high school should take this class. This class is designed around the state proficiency test objectives.
D BIOLOGY II
Level: 10th-12th Grade
Prerequisite: Biology 1/Ag Biology
Advanced Biology is a continuation of Biology I. The first semester will be spent on botany & microbiology. The major animal phyla will be studied. Dissection and many other laboratory activities are part of the first semester in Advanced Biology.
The second semester of Advanced Biology is a complete study of the invertebrates & vertebrate zoology. Much of this course involves presentations by students on various topics, biological research along with writing of biological papers and required presentations.
D CHEMISTRY
Level: 11th & 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Algebra I
In this course one will learn the fundamental principles of chemical reactions, the properties of some elements and compounds, and the development of the present day atomic theories. The course deals with such topics as observations, atomic theory, chemical bonding, and energy of bonding, states of matter, solutions, chemical equilibrium and carbon compounds. Instructional activities will include reading from the text, use of the laboratory to do investigations 10-12 times throughout the year, teacher demonstrations, and movies. The student will be evaluated on such things as his/her ability to balance chemical equations, to explain the development of the atomic theory, to predict chemical reactions and proportions, and to use the laboratory properly.
D PHYSICS
Level: 11th & 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Algebra II with “C+” or better.
This course will enable the student to apply the theories and techniques of science to common machines and household devices. The student will study matter and energy, measurement, forces, motion, atomic structure, radiation, atomic power, heat, light, electricity, astronomy and electronics. The major instructional activities are 12-16 laboratory investigations with reports, numerous experiments and demonstrations, lectures, and problem solving.

This course is designed for students who have a solid background in mathematics. The content of this class integrates geometry, probability, and statistics together with algebra. Pure and applied mathematics are also integrated throughout.

E PRE-CALCULUS/TRIGONOMETRY
Level: Grade 11 or 12
This course is designed for students who have had success at the high school level in mathematics and who plan to attend an university for further education. It is an advanced mathematics course, which will require thirty minutes a day of study outside of the classroom.
Pre-Calculus is an in-depth exploration of functions and curves and their real-life applications. This course is intended to ready a student for the study of Calculus but can also serve as a capstone for their high school career.
E ADVANCED PLACEMENT CALCULUS

This course is designed for students who have had success at the high school level in mathematics and are considering mathematics or related subject area at the university level.

E STATISTICS
Level: Grade 12
Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry
This course is designed for students who will be attending a college or university following high school but do not wish to pursue a career in mathematics or a related field. We at Ubly Community Schools feel college or university bound students should be actively engaged in a mathematics course their senior year. We are highly encouraging our students not to take their senior year off from the study and exploration of mathematics.
Statistics is a refresher course in basic math and algebraic skills. The study of Statistics, Probability, Consumer Math, and Logic will be additional skills added to their repertoire. This course is intended to help students meet the basic requirements of any entry-level mathematics course they may face in their higher education. This course is also very helpful for life-long skills they will need as educated adult consumers.
E HS MATH SUPPORT RR

Math Support is designed to help students grasp basic skills in Algebra. The course focuses on basic Algebra skills such as how to:
- Create equations that describe numbers or relationships
- Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning both numerically and by graphing.
- Explore and interpret real-world problems as well as patterns and their representations
- Explore mathematical relationships, analyze data and recognize problems

DL SPANISH I
Level: 9th-12th Grades
Spanish I is an introductory course in which the student acquires the basic communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of the Spanish language and becomes acquainted with the culture of Spanish speaking people. Students are evaluated on the basis of homework completion, quiz & test grades and projects.
DL SPANISH II
Level: 10th-12th Grades
Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I. Skill in communication is improved; and, more emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and vocabulary building. Class materials are the same as those used in Spanish I. Students are evaluated on the basis of homework, quizzes, tests and projects.
DL SPANISH III
Level: 11th-12th Grades
Prerequisite: Spanish I & II and consent of the instructor
Spanish III is an advanced level course designed to strengthen and build upon the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills already obtained in Spanish I and II. Students will also study they literature of Spanish speaking cultures while learning the vocabulary and grammar structures of the Spanish language.
G MECHATRONICS
Level: 9th through 12th grades
Mechatronics is a combination of precision engineering, electronic control and mechanic systems. It is the science that exists at the interface among the other five disciplines: mechanics, electronics, informatics, automation, and robotics.
G MEDIA-TECH I
Level: 10th, 11th, &12th Grade
This video course will require the participants to do several video projects such as commercials, interviews, morning announcements and more. The course will also entail the use of video equipment such as camcorders, videocassette recorders and video editing equipment (sound mixer, video mixer). In this course we will attempt to maximize your talent strengths whether it be on screen talent, video editing, or technicians. The first few weeks of the course will be spent learning how to use the equipment by completing projects similar to the types previously mentioned. Eventually, we hope to do live broadcasts of sporting events where we will need camera people, sports announcers, statistician, and what ever else that may be needed to pull such a production together.
Therefore, people wishing to sign up for this course will need to be dedicated, for some evenings the student will be required to work on the production of such an event (gathering statistics, camera setup, etc.).
This course is meant be fun and exciting, but students will have to have a serious approach to writing and especially professionalism (imperative during live broadcasts) when it comes time to be in front of the camera.
G MEDIA TECH II
Level: 11th and 12th Grade
In this class, second year students will be responsible for training first year students on the procedures and equipment used. The second year students will also become the production engineers for all of the assignments and weekly broadcasts. In the first weeks of the class, each second year student will be assigned a group of first year students to train and ready for their first project/production, items include: camera usage. S-VHS VCR’s, Macintosh computers including Avid Cinema (video to digital editing software).
G HONORS MEDIA
Level: 12th Grade
Honors media is a class designed for the advanced student who has had experience in Media I and beginning experience in Media II. The student(s) will be required to complete projects for WUHS TV, Video Yearbook projects, and special projects (anniversary, class reunion, birthday videos, etc.) for people within our school and/or community. The student(s) in this class will often work unsupervised and be expected to complete projects as detailed by the instructor.
G ADVANCED PLACEMENT COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES
Level: 10th, 11th & 12th Grade
AP Computer Science Principles is an introductory college-level computing course. Students cultivate their understanding of computer science through working with data, collaborating to solve problems, and developing computer programs as they explore concepts like creativity, abstraction, data and information, algorithms, programming, the internet, and the global impact of computing.
J MUSIC HISTORY/APPRECIATION
Level: 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th Grade
Students will be introduced to a variety of music time periods and styles of music. These may include but are not limited to: Jazz, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century, Rock & Roll, Medieval, and World Music. Students will also be expected to listen to music outside of class and to bring their experiences to class for discussion.
J SENIOR BAND
Level: 9th-12th Grade
Prerequisite: Beginning Band, Junior Band, Pass audition and written exam
Senior Band members must be willing to work as a unit during the marching and the concert seasons in order for Ubly to have a successful music program. Class time is used to prepare for the many activities with some evening rehearsals scheduled when needed. Students must strive to improve their marching and performance skills and also improve their basic music theory. Many activities are offered to those students who qualify: Marching Band, Band Day, field trips, concerts, Solo & Ensemble competition, band festivals, Pep band, summer band, etc.
J JAZZ BAND
Level: 9-12 Grades
The Jazz Band will be offered as an early bird class. Students will listen to, learn and perform many different styles of jazz. As well as learn jazz improvisation. Credit may be earned depending on number of days of participation.
L ART I
Level: 9th-12th Grade
Students will be introduced to drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery and weaving techniques. They will explore the use of many art media including pencil, water color, pastels, clay, and fiber, color and design concepts, simple perspective, art history, and current art news will be included in their instructions.
L ART II
Level: 10th-12th Grades
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art I
A continuation of Art I, students will use foundation of Art I to study advanced techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, and fiber design, detailed pen and ink drawing, advanced pencil drawing, calligraphy, acrylic painting, relief sculpture, advanced pottery, and simple basketry will be introduced. Art History and current art news will be continued. Students will maintain an art portfolio.
L ART III
Level: 11th & 12th Grade
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art II
This course is designed for advanced art students. A continuation of drawing techniques will include pencil and pen and ink. Preliminary sketches will accompany sculptures, collage, mixed media, advanced design concepts, advanced perspective techniques, and free-form pottery will be introduced. Art History/news are included in the curriculum. Students will maintain an art portfolio.
L ART IV
Level: 12th Grade
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art III.
This course allows students to explore advanced techniques in an assortment/selection of art media. Independent study is encouraged in long-term projects.
M PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Level: 9th Grade, Semester Class
Students will develop and enhance their knowledge of rules, theories, and skills of various team and individual sports and recreational games. Emphasis will be placed on the play aspect rather than the practice aspect of various sports. Students will participate in: football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, softball, track & field, golf, weightlifting, dance and other recreational activities. Students will also be introduced to human anatomy through handouts and class discussion. These activities will be evaluated by amount of participation, attitude, and short tests over the subject matter.
Students will also continue to use the Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS) weightlifting program. Those students who have not participated in BFS Readiness Program (Jr. High) will begin with the readiness program before participating in the regular BFS program.
M ADVANCED PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Level: 10th-12th Grade
Prerequisite: Student must have lettered in any varsity sport, received credit for 9th grade P.E., or have permission from instructor to be entered into the class.
Students taking this class will be introduced/continuation to the Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS) weigh lifting program. Students will participate in the 6 basic core lifts on a daily basis. Other activities include: Plyometrics and Speed Training, Team Sports, and basic Physiology. Students will be frequently tested on lifting technique/safety guidelines and physiology.
N INDEPENDENT STUDY
Level: 9th – 12th Grades
A student may take an independent study if the school deems it necessary to fulfill graduation requirements and because of scheduling conflicts. The student will work in conjunction with the teacher and fulfill the requirements of the class. Independent studies are limited to classes offered through Ubly High School and are only offered in limited circumstances.
N MICHIGAN VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL COURSES
Level: 9th – 12th
These courses are taken over the internet and may include Foreign Language, Flex 90, or Student Direct Courses. Students should have above a 6th grade reading level, be proficient at accessing the internet, and have basic word processor abilities. Courses must be approved by the counselor before enrolling.

VHD AG BIOLOGY
Level: 9-12 Grades
The student will study units in the life sciences as they pertain to agriculture. They will study units in animal anatomy, nutrition, housing, reproduction, health, and improvement. They will study units in plant anatomy, nutrition, planting, harvesting, and storage. Students will be required to maintain outside projects such as experiments, agriculture placement, or production projects such as livestock or crops. Students are expected to participate in a leadership contest and a career development contest.
VHD BOTANY
Level: 10th – 12th Grades
Prerequisite: Ag. Biology or Biology I
Botany takes an advanced look into plant life processes. Students get hands on learning in growing plants using various reproductive methods. Students also experiment with plant vascular systems and genetics. They will also get a small amount of practice in plant identification, floral design, greenhouse care and landscaping.
Zoology is a constantly growing field. Major changes are occurring in the animal industry every year. The changes are having radical impacts on education in animal care and production. Animal science is much more than just cattle, swine, and chickens. It integrates a multitude of perspectives on animal education including biological concepts, nutrition and medical technologies, evaluating breeding animals, and even some biotechnology.
VHD CAREERS & LEADERSHIP I
Level: 9th – 12th Grades
The first semester of this class will be designed around developing leadership skills in students. It will focus on public speaking, formal presentations and forum speaking. All of these skills will help any college bound student with future classes. The second semester of this class will focus on Careers. We will begin with basic skills including job interview and resume writing. We will then move into professional portfolio creation (possibly web page based portfolios if the equipment is available), job hunting, and planning for future careers. Many universities are requiring students to have these skills by the time they graduate, and this class will help students get a head start on those skills.
VHD CAREERS & LEADERSHIP II
Level: Grade 10, 11 & 12
Prerequisite: Careers & Leadership I
The Leadership and Careers II class will provide students a more in depth look at leadership. They will be responsible to complete individual leadership assignments and projects that will extend the learning that they gained in the first leadership class. They will also be responsible to lead the Leadership & Careers class through team building activities throughout the year. For the careers portion of the class, students will be asked to develop their individual portfolios including career plans, college research, and job shadowing/college visits.
VHD CAREERS & LEADERSHIP III
Level: Grade 11 & 12
Prerequisite: Careers & Leadership II
This course will offer advanced skills and activities. This is a continuation of Careers and Leadership II.
VHD VETERINARY SCIENCE
Prerequisite: Biology I or Ag Biology
Level: Grades 10-12
Veterinary Science will help prepare students for a profession or further education in any medical field. It is designed to use veterinary concepts, but any student that is considering a career in any medical, pharmaceutical or veterinary profession will benefit from this class. Students that complete the class with an average of 85% or higher will be eligible to receive a veterinary assistant certification. The class will be made up of classroom instruction and lab practicums which use real animals, specimens, and models. Topics that will be covered include:
